Matt has recorded and played around New Zealand on saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar and bass, in almost every style imaginable, but these days focuses mainly on post-bop and contemporary jazz. Matt graduated from Christchurch Jazz School in 2001, and has a BMus, majoring in saxophone and composition. As a saxophonist, Matt frequently features as a session musician, and currently leads his own jazz trio and quartet, as well as playing lead alto in The Garden City Big Band – one of New Zealand’s premier big bands..
As a teacher, Matt has run the music department at ‘Unlimited’ School (an innovative ‘alternative’ state school in Christchurch NZ) for the last 11 years. Over this time, he has trained many of Christchurch’s most successful young musicians, and has garnered a string of national awards.
